- Joburg's tap water is safe.
- This is a malaria-free area.
- There are excellent private and state hospitals and clinics. Most private health facilities will ask for cash or credit card payments.
- Food safety is strictly enforced, and most areas are well served by supermarkets and restaurants.
- The country's peak flu season is May to August. Most pharmacies and medical doctors offer flu vaccines.
- It is illegal to smoke in any public enclosed or partially cloased area, or on public transport.
- If you're roaming with a non-South African mobile phone and want to phone locally, you should dial your country's exit code, the South African country code (27) and ignore the first (0) from the local area code.


Safety Tips


Use common sense precautions as you would in any large city;
- Don't expose valuables such as jewellery and mobile phones, and stow bags out of sight.
- Don't carry unnecessary money or credit cards with you.
- Don't walk alone, especially at night, and stay in well-lit areas.
- Follow main routes when travelling.
- Don't hitch-hike or pick up strangers in your vehicle. Be aware at intersections.
- Never let anyone assist you at an automatic cash machine, and beware of anyone asking you for help.
- At shops, garages, restaurants and bars, insist that a portable credit card machine to be brought to you, or go with the attendant or waiter to the machine.
- Ensure that you have photocopies of all your cards (back and front), which makes it far simpler to cancel them if they are lost or stolen.
- Report lost or stolen passports at a police station. They will give you a docket case number. Take this to your consulate for help in obtaining a new or temporary passport.
- At your hotel, keep your front door locked and lock your valuables in the safe.
